There’s a whole laundry list of toxins in the home, but today we’re going to talk about the most harmful to your health. In 2005, I discovered my children were allergic to everything and sometimes I wonder if it was because I was such a germ-a-phobe who disinfected way too much. When you kill the bacteria on your countertops with cleaning wipes like Clorox and Lysol, you’re destroying all the good stuff too.

- Clorox Wipes– most people think this is the quickest, safest way to clean surfaces in their homes, but this mama knows all to well that it is the most dangerous. If you’ve ever picked these cloths up and started cleaning with it and then felt a chemical reaction on your hands, it’s because they are highly toxic. Use Castile or mild soap instead. I dab some on the counters and wipe clean with a good rinse.
- Fabric Softener– Methylisothiazolinone is a skin allergen and causes reactions in many people. Glutaral is a chemical that can (and in most cases) triggers respiratory irritation, gut issues. Other ingredients cause cancers.
- Dryer Sheets– filled with so many chemicals that irritate the skin, cause breathing problems, chokes you in many cases…instead use wool dryer balls.
- Candles– the fumes set off by these toxic items are enough to cause some cancers, breathing problems. Use oil diffusers or burn sage instead.
- Plug Ins– these just mask odors in your homes and cause breathing problems, brain fog, mental clutter, sleep disturbances, gut issues, the list goes on. Ditch them immediately and use nothing at all or you can put a little lemongrass in a spray bottle, alcohol and water to make your own room spray.
- Febreeze Spray (Room Sprays)- same as above. Highly toxic, one of the most toxic things in your homes. Especially for pets, babies, young children.
- Toilet Paper– contains chemicals like PFAS and 4-nonylphenol. Toilet paper has also been suspected of chronic irritation of the vulva and linked to colon cancer. Instead use Scott, Plant Paper, Reel.
- Clutter– robs you from living your best life. such a toxicity in your home. declutter often until it’s under control.
- Laundry Soap– filled with chemicals, causes allergies, use dye free instead.
- Cleaners– every household cleaning product has some type of chemical in it. NONE are safe. To be safe, use baking soda, Castile soap and plain ol’ water.

- Lotion, Beauty Products– the industry is oversaturated with toxins in beauty, feminine products. Even packaging, labeling stating “Organic” “Natural” can have chemicals in them that irritate the skin. Here’s a product elimination guide that includes cleaning products too.
- Toothpaste, Mouthwash– watched a reel to learn about this one. Use coconut oil to rinse your mouth instead.
- Dish Soap, Pods– contain concentrated, potentially harmful chemicals. Accidental ingestion can lead to chemical burns to the mouth, airway, esophagus, stomach, and bowels. In severe cases, it could lead to lethargy, metabolic acidosis, and even death.
- Mattress, Furniture– contain polyurethane, flame retardants, formaldehyde, mold and dust are also very toxic. Did you know that dust contains mold and other harmful toxins.
- Clothing– polyester, rayon, nylon. Check out the organic options:

- Houseplants– certain plants are toxic to your animals, babies if they get a hold of them. Safe plants for cats: catnip, cat grass, spider plants. Always just be cautious and keep your loved ones out of the plants.
- Pans, Cutting boards, Utensils– your cookware is toxic, especially plastic and if you have coffee pots, those too harbor mold which is highly dangerous. Be mindful of how to clean these small appliances and invest in high quality to be safe.
- Food & Water– Yes, your food and water is toxic. Pay attention to allergens and be sure to put a filter on your drinking water.

Being more mindful about everything that comes into your home is key to living healthier.
The fastest, most easiest ways to remove toxins from the inside of your homes is by opening the windows and/or doors everyday for 10-15 minutes. Let the natural sunlight come in. Let the toxicity out.
